Shifted Exclusiveness—a video

I found this link on the Webby Awards site. It’s a Flash (I can look past the fact that it’s proprietary for the sake of a good piece of art) video, entitled Shifted Exclusiveness. The piece touches on the themes of social identity within a culture of privilege, and does so quite elegantly (despite at least one spelling error). Definitely worth a look.

You forgot about the social barriers, sir. *tsk*

As humans we can only guess how many social barriers split us up among “our kind” but I am sure that the number is in the millions (i.e. the weather, where you live, how long your parents lived etc.).

We know we shouldn’t let these things affect us, but we do anyway, don’t we?

Each social barrier limits the growth of those “trapped” within it. Even as the lower classes do not know what “the high life” would be like, the higher classes do not feel the pain of the lower classes. But they do feel pain other things. They don’t know who THEY are. If you are in the lower class, it is paramount that you know who you are, otherwise you will not know what you want. The higher classes don’t need to know each other in THIS case, but when it comes to the social courtyard in between all the barriers, they don’t know what to say because they don’t know what they themselves would say as a human.

And what of those that are not trapped in a social barrier? Who do they stand? With the people who cross the border. With the millionaire who wears clothes from sears and ignores is vast wealth, with the lower class person who has accumulated enough skills and money to go to harvard and not look like a hobo. But these people have been bereft of the people they see fit to talk to. They all think that the lower class success is to unworthy to even look at them. The higher class disguised as a middle class is looked down apon by “his own kind” and shunned from the gated communities familiar to him. And they they meet each other whilst wandering among the world. And we’ll all get jealous because they had the guts to stick up for they believe in.

I like you, you make me think. :)

*please say this wasn’t as lame as the last one*
